Ecotoxicology
The environmental risk assessment under REACH requires a robust ecotoxicology database to provide an assessment of the effects on indicator species. We have a wide range of experience and expertise in all areas of ecotoxicology.
JSC are actively involved in a number of expert groups developing test guidelines and risk assessment schemes at EU level. We additionally have practical experience of all levels of ecotoxicological testing, from laboratory through to field. This experience enables us to put together and implement study packages to meet specific project requirements. The environmental risk assessment applies safety factors to the ecotoxicology endpoints, such as toxicity to fish, Daphnia or algae to generate the Predicted No Effect Concentration (PNEC). The ratio between the PEC and PNEC is ultimately used as an indicator of risk, allowing it to be quantified. If the PEC is less than the PNEC (i.e. ratio < 1), then it is assumed that there is an acceptable risk of effects to the environment.
We are also able to provide expert interpretation of the available information to maximise its benefit and to ensure a favourable regulatory outcome.
