Environmental Fate
The assessment of the fate and behaviour in the environment of plant protection products is a critical part of the evaluation process under 91/414/EEC and we offer specialist support in this area.
Predicted Environmental Concentrations (PEC) of active substances and metabolite in each environmental compartment are calculated using advanced computer models and the values compared with important triggers for further higher tier testing. PECs also provide the basic exposure values used in the environmental risk assessment.FOCUS ground and surface water scenarios are the basic tools used to calculate Predicted Environmental Concentrations (PEC) in groundwater and surface water. However, determining the appropriate input values for the models, even for the initial assessment can be quite challenging. JSC has extensive experience of FOCUS scenarios, a comprehensive understanding of the models involved, and an appreciation of the agronomic practices. This expertise allows us to refine the input parameters to produce higher tier assessments. We additionally specialise in presenting detailed modelling to regulatory authorities.
Metabolites occurring at low levels can be considered as potentially relevant and often require special investigation from both an environmental and toxicological aspects. The cross discipline approach adopted by JSC, enable the experts to work together, to quickly and comprehensively address the issues to obtain a regulatory conclusion.
JSC also has experience of a range of higher-tier studies including field dissipation, accumulation, lysimeter and field leaching studies and can help design and interpret studies to address specific regulatory issues.
