Andy Croucher
Environmental expert (and amateur womble)

Andy’s move to JSC has enabled him to use his considerable scientific skills at the sharp end of the regulatory environment and he now works across many of the scientific disciplines, specialising in the environmental fate of chemicals.

After leaving school Andy immersed himself in the agrochemical world at Shell Research Ltd., where he was lucky enough to work with some great and inspirational scientists. Andy quickly gained extensive analytical skills and used them to look for pesticide residues in samples as diverse as water and penguin fat. He then started work on radio tracer studies and embraced a new range of techniques and complex calculations, which were used to explore the fate of chemicals in animals, plants and soil.

When Shell withdrew from the agrochemical market in 1993, Andy continued to work on metabolism and analytical studies, but became frustrated that he was unable to use the knowledge gained in his previous position. His move to JSC has finally allowed him to use his combination of skills to the full.

Andy’s interest in science and the natural world also shapes his life at home, where he can often be found in his shed making something useful from discarded items, or tending his wildlife friendly garden.
