Since 2007, the EFSA PRIMo (Pesticide Residue Intake Model), an Excel-based calculation spreadsheet, has been the standard tool used at EU level to perform the dietary risk assessment for pesticide residues in the framework of setting and reviewing of maximum residue levels for pesticides under Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 and in the peer review of pesticides under Regulation (EU) No 1107/2009. The model has been updated with regard to food consumption data derived from some recent dietary food surveys. In addition, new functionalities have been included in the calculation spread sheet to make the tool more user-friendly and to allow automatic integration of the EFSA PRIMo in the workflows where dietary risk assessments are performed.
The Excel-based consumer risk assessment model and supporting guidance are available online in the EFSA Journal (link).
It has been agreed to apply the Primo model rev. 3 to new applications from 1 February 2018 (date of receipt of the application in the Member State) and for Art. 12 reviews (date of launch of data call-in by EFSA).
It should be noted that EFSA is already working on a major revision 4 which will take some time as it will contain the more comprehensive food consumption database. In the meantime, more frequent minor revisions to the current revision will be issued as necessary.
