After graduating from Humboldt-University in Berlin and conducting research at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology in Potsdam-Golm, Irene moved to the UK to embark on a plant molecular biology PhD at Royal Holloway, University of London. Following that, Irene worked for 5 years in product development at Genetix Ltd, a robotics technology provider for medical research.
In 2009 Irene joined Syngenta as a PostDoctoral researcher studying soil microbial communities in agri systems, followed by 8 years working as an environmental fate expert and project manager. During this time Irene has held responsibility for a number of herbicide, fungicide, and insecticide projects at all stages of the plant protection R&D and active ingredient registration life-cycle.
In her spare time Irene is busy with her young family and can be found, when time allows, with her nose stuck in a novel.
