Graduating from the University of Aberdeen with a BSc (Hons) in Zoology, Mel began her career as an Animal Carer by volunteering in a seal rescue centre before moving to a zoo on the south coast of the UK to work predominantly with primates but also big cats, birds and reptiles. After taking time out to travel around Australia and New Zealand she returned to the UK and in 2008 took a position with Opus (now NOV / Fjords Processing) based in Orkney, Scotland. Initially employed to focus on the maintenance and improvement of various husbandry and culturing practices, Mel was also involved in conducting marine ecotoxicology studies for the petrochemical industry. During her time at Opus she quickly progressed to the level of study director and hatchery supervisor. In the interests of expanding her knowledge to include freshwater ecotoxicology, Mel relocated to Harrogate in 2012 to join a leading Contract Research Organisation as an aquatic study director working in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical and chemical industries.
Growing up in Orkney, Mel was never far from the sea and local wildlife enabling her to indulge her passion for working with animals and photography.
