Update on EFSA Guidance Document on the residue definition for risk assessment

A guidance document on the process for defining the residue definition for risk assessment was published by EFSA in December 2016 (https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/efsajournal/pub/4549). Although the document was adopted in July 2016, a clear timetable for the implementation of the processes described in the document has not been available. The Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (SCoPAFF) meeting in September 2017 proposed that a deferred application of 18 months should be implemented to ensure that all relevant parties can comply with the new requirements (i.e. not applicable until 2nd quarter 2019). The Commission stressed that neither Member States or EFSA should make use of the Guidance Document before it becomes applicable. EFSA confirmed that training for applicants and Member States will be provided to facilitate the use of the new tools reported in the Guidance document.
